هناك أتصال وثيق بين الفعل نسقاً صيغياً , وبين زمنه نسقاً وضعياً وضع له , ولعل هذا الاتصال كان مثار جدل بين النحاة أئمتهم قديماً , ومن هذا حذوهم حديثاً إذ إنهم ذهبوا في شأن دلالة الفعل على الزمن مذاهب شتى , وتفرقوا شيعاً منهم من رأى أن دلالة الفعل على الزمن مرتبطة بصيغته الصرفية , ف ( فعل ) تدل على الزمن الماضي , و ( يفعل ) تدل على الزمن الحاضر أو المضارع , و ( أفعل ) تدل على الاستقبال ومنهم من رأى عدم دلالة صيغة ( أفعل ) للمخاطب على الزمن بأعتبارها صورة مقتطعة من المضارع , ورأوا ان صيغة ( فاعل ) هي الاولى بأن تكون قسيمة ( فعل ) و ( يفعل ) ويذهب أخرون من المعاصرين إلى أن الفعل له دلالتان زمنيتان إحداهما صرفية تخضع للصيغة , والأخرى نحوية تخضع للسياق والنصوص التي ترد فيها.
