الدفوع الزمنية هي تلك الدفوع المتعلقة أساساً بالمواعيد والآجال والمدد التي تقررها نصوص القوانين، فالقانون عندما يحدد ميعاداً معناً لإجراء ما فإن ذلك يعني أن لهذا الإجراء زمن محدد، له تاريخ للبدء وتاريخ آخر للانتهاء منه، وأن الفترة الواقعة بين بدء الإجراء ونهايته هي زمن الإجراء.
وتنقسم الموسوعة إلى أربع مجلدات. خصننا كل مجلد من هذه المجلدات الأربع لمعالجة مشكلات المواعيد والمدد والآجال في فروع بعينها من فروع القانون، فأوضحنا الميعاد أو الآجل أو المدة -حسب النص التشريعي- ثم أوردنا الشرح والتعليق، وأخيراً التطبيقات القضائية لمحكمة النقض وفق ما استقر وقر من قضائها وكذا ما استحدث وجد.
ولا نماري أن أقلاما قد سبقتنا المواعيد لكننا أثرنا لأنفسنا نهجاً مختلفاً -أو هكذا نزعم- راعينا فيه أن يكون الجهد الخاص بالشرح والتعليق أكثر وجوداً وأكثراً تأصيلاً.
