تعبر اللغة بالمقولات النحوية عن المفاهيم والتصورات البشرية، وعن كيفية بنائها في الأذهان، وعلى اللسانيّ أن يرصد هذه المفاهيم وينسبها إلى اللغة الطبيعية من خلال مسألة تعبيرتها، وإقتراح أنسقة علاقية مبررة بين المقولة النحوية وما يقابلها من تصورات.
وفي هذا الإطار، يقتضي البحث في الإحالة الزمنية مساءلة تعبير مقولة الزمن عن أشكال هذه الإحالة في تنوعها وفي نسقيتها، ورصد تنوع المقولات الزمنية، وربط أشكال الزمن النحوية بالتصور الزمني.
وينصب هذا العمل على تنوع الإحالة الزمنية في اللغة العربية وما يقابله من تنوع في الصرف، سواء أكان هذا الصرف عبارة عن تناوبات صيغية، أم كان أدوات ومكونات تدخل على الفعل بانية بذلك تنوع التعبير الزمني في العربية؛ كما يسعى العمل إلى بناء نسق زمني - جهي يرصد هذا التنوع ويعبر عنه إعتماداً على بعض النظريات والإجتهادات الحديثة.
غير أن البحث في نسق الزمن في اللغة العربية يواجه ما يمارسه التقليد الإستشراقي من تأثير، ومعلوم أن النحاة العرب القدماء يعقدون، بإزاء التمايز الصرفي في الفعل، تمايزاً زمنياً؛ أما أغلب المستشرقين فيرون فيه تمايزاً جهياً.
وقد أثرت هذه الدراسات، العربية منها والإستشراقية، على الطريقة التي حلل بها النسق الزمني في اللغة العربية، في جعل الكثير من الأبحاث تنحو هذا المنحى أو ذاك، يضاف إلى هذا مشكل آخر له طبيعة نظرية؛ فأول سؤال نظري، ينبغي طرحه بخصوص التمايزات الزمنية التي تعبر عنها الأفعال، يتعلق بمعرفة مدى إمكان إقامة خطاطة للأزمنة النحوية يكون إنطباقها كلياً.
من هنا ينصب إهتمامنا على مشاكل الإحالة الزمنية وعلى توضيح إرتباطها بمفهوم الزمنية كما تعبر عنه اللغات عموماً، ومن ثم فإن منظورنا منظور مقارن، وخاصة بلغات خضعت معطياتها للوصف واعتمدت في إقتراح إفتراضات أساسية.
