هذا الكتاب ربما يسأل سائل لماذا حشرت شخصية زلماي خليل زاد الذي يتناول القادة العراقيين أمثال إياد علاوي وعبد العزيز الحكيم وجلال الطالباني وبعض القصص عن العنف الطائفي؟
هذا صحيح، ولكن زاد لعب دوراً مهماً إستراتيجياً كمنسق بين هذه الشخصيات حينما كانت تعارض نظام صدام، وأيضاً في تشكيل الحكومات التي نلت سقوط نظام البعث وصدام.
والقارئ يرى هذا الدور وفاعليته، فمثلاً لولا تدخل هذا السفير الذي كان أكثر من سفير يؤدي مهام دبلوماسية بين رئيس الوزراء العراقي آنذاك الجعفري والرئيس العراقي الطالباني حينما كان يتشاجر الإثنان على بناية الناتو والتي تقع ضمن حدود المنطقة الخضراء لحصلت حرب أهلية عربية كردية داخل المنطقة الخضراء ولتحولت حمراء، فلولا هذا التدخل الأمريكي "زاد" لانتهت الأمور ربما بمعركة تقودها البيشمركة من جهة وميليشيا رئيس الوزراء كما يصفها أندرسون.
تصوّروا، كانت مقدمات الحرب الأهلية خارج حدود المنطقة الخضراء في بغداد بين طوائف الشعب العراقي على أوجها، وبدل أن تتوحّد جهود القادة لإطفاء فتيل هذه الحرب التي ستأخذ العراق إلى اللاعراق، كان القائدان يتحاربان حول بناية!. هذه بعض من المشاهد الساخرة والمؤلمة التي يسوقها أندرسون عبر تناوله لهذه الشخصيات.
هذا الكتاب الذي هو عبارة عن مشاهدات وحوارات خاضها الإعلامي والكاتب الأمريكي أندرسون مع أهم الشخصيات التي هيمنت على المشهد السياسي في العراق آنذاك وبعضها ما زال بشكل ظاهرة حتى اليوم، ونُشرت جميعها بنصها الأصلي في مجلة النيويوركر الأمريكية الشهيرة.
