إن الباحث الذي يتصدى لدراسة المرأة والرجل في الأسرة من حيث علاقتهما بالتغير الاجتماعي لا بد أن يجول في ميدان المعرفة العربية والغربية. وأن يشير إلى البحوث العلمية التي تتناول هذا الموضوع واتجاهاتها وأفكارها والأهداف التي تسعى إلى تحقيقها. وقد كان موضوع المرأة والرجل في الأسرة ودورهما في الأسرة ذا أهمية خاصة للدكتورة سامية الساعاتي؛ إذ ترى أن الموقف الذي نشهده الآن ليس نتاج الدعامات البيولوجية لأدوار الجنسين وحدها، ولا هو حصيلة التفاوت الذي تفرضه وتصر عليه نظم المجتمع ومؤسساته المختلفة، إنما يرجع إلى التمييز والتفرقة بين الرجال والنساء إلى المعتقدات الاجتماعية والثقافية والاتجاهات السائدة في المجتمع.
أما التغير الاجتماعي فيما يتعلق بدور المرأة والرجل في الأسرة فالمقصود به إعادة الصياغة، وهي إعادة تستلزم تغيير علاقات القوة، والمقصود ليس محاولة تمكين المرأة على حساب الرجل، فهو تصور بدائي ساذج لا يغير من الأمر شيئًا، لكن ما نبغيه هو إعادة التوازن ومحاولة بلورة الرؤى والمواقف بينهما.
