يأتي نحتنا لمصطلح ما فوق البنيوية ليشمل حقول البنيويين، والسيميائيين، والألتوسيريين، والماركسيين، والفوكويين، وما بعد البنيويين إلخ. ذلك أن البنيوية وحدها لم تعد من الإتساع بمكان للتعامل مع كتاب أمثال فوكو، يرفضون بشدة نعتهم بالبنيويين، أو أمثال ديريدا، ممّن يصرحون بموقفهم المتعارض مع البنيويين.
ولعل من الأنسب الإحتفاظ بهذا المصطلح من كتّاب أمثال سوسير، وياكوبسن، وليفي ستراوس، وغريماس، وبارث (من خلال كتبه "مبادئ السيميولوجيا" و"أسطوريات"، و"نظام الموضة") بوصفهم مشتركين في نمط تفكير خاص بالبنيات، وفي علاقتها بالبنيوية، تبدو ما فوق البنيوية كأعلى بنيوية، من حيث هي ظاهرة أوسع وأعلى، كما إن مصطلح ما فوق البنيوية (إذا ما أخذنا "ما فوق" بمعناها اللاتيني المحدد) يمكنه مدّنا بنقط إرتكاز بالإحالة على المصطلح المؤسس سلفاً.
على أن بالإمكان قراءة هذا المصطلح بمعنى آخر أهم، أي كنزعة ذات ما فوق بنية، بإعتبار أن إحدى القضايا التي يشترك فيها البنيويون، والسيميائيون، والألتوسيريون، والماركسيون، والفوكويون، وما بعد البنيويين، إنّما تكمن في نمط تفكير خاص بالمافوق بنيات، أو بتعبير آخر، يقلب ما فوق البنيويون، النماذج العادية للبنية الأساسية، والبنية الفوقية، إلى حد أن ما اعتدنا الإعتقاد بكونه فوق بنائي يتخذ في الواقع الأسبقية على ما اعتدنا إعتباره أساساً.
وفي هذا الإطار تمثل ما فوق البنيوية ما اعتاد فوكو (في أي حالة غير حالته) نعته بــ (الإبستيم) وهو الإطار الأساس للمقاربة والتصور، وحتى عندما يفند ديريدا ليفي ستراوس، أو عندما يعلن بودريار الحرب على فوكو، فإن الكراهيات تظل مقادة فوق هذه الأرضية المشتركة.
