تجد ما فوق البنيوية جذورها في العلوم الإنسانية، لكونها اشتقت أساساً من الطريقة التي تأسست منها اللسانيات، والأنتربولوجيا الإجتماعية في فرنسا حوالي مستهل القرن العشرين؛ في ذلك الإبان كان نوع جديد من الحقيقة – حقيقة الإنسان – يسبح في نطاق المعرفة العلمية متطلباً تطوير منظور جديد.
ولم يكن هذا المنظور الجديد سوى امتداد لمنظور العلوم الطبيعية – رغم أنه استغرق خمسين سنة كما يُبرز الحجم الحقيقي للإنفصال، وبموجبه شكلت العلوم الإنسانية نفسها كعلوم غير طبيعية.
يأتي نحتنا لمصطلح ما فوق النبوية ليشمل عامة حقول البنيوين، والسيميائيين، والألتوسيريين، والماركسيين، والفوكويين، وما بعد البنيويين إلخ، ذلك أن البنيوية لوحدها لم تعد من الإتساع بمكان للتعامل مع كتاب، أمثال فوكو، يرفضون بشدة نعتهم بالبنيويين، أو أمثال ديريدا، الذين يصرحون بموقفهم المتعارض مع البنيويين.
