يتناول هذا الكتاب مفهوم الفعل (فعل الإنسان، الفعل الاجتماعي) من جوانبه الأنطولوجية والإبيستيمولوجية، ويسعى لتقصي العلاقات بين ما هو جسدي-طبيعي وقابل للملاحظة والدراسة العلمية في أفعال الإنسان، وبين ما هو معنوي-ذهني (قد) يخرج بتلك الأفعال عن نطاق ما يمكن استيعابه اعتمادًا على العلوم الطبيعية (على خلاف العلوم الاجتماعية والإنسانية). انطلاقًا من التمييز بين أحداث الطبيعة وأفعال الإنسان، يقدم الكتاب عرضًا للخلاف القائم بين التوجهات الطبيعانية في دراسة أفعال الإنسان مثل السلوكية والوظائفية بصورهما المختلفة، والتوجهات التأويلية (الهرمينوطيقا)، في محاولة لإدراك طبيعة الخلاف القائم وإمكانية جسر الهوة بين ما هو مادي وما هو معنوي في أفعال الإنسان، والنتائج الفلسفية التي تترتب على عدم القيام بذلك.
