بعد أن تُرجمت أعمال زيبالد إلى العديد من لغات العالم، لأول مرة يُترجم إلى اللغة العربية، مع أن أسمه ورد على قوائم المرشحين لجائزة نوبل، ولاقت رواياته المديح من أبرز النقاد في العالم، كما اختيرت رواية "المغتربون" كأفضل كتاب في عام 1996.
يكتب زيبالد بلغة أنيقة، مع أنها خالية من التنميق، ليبني شخصيات نكاد نحسّ بكل الآلام والتجارب التي عاشها، فمن خلال تأملاتٍ في الذاكرة والفقد يعيد زيبالد خلق حيوات أبطال روايته عبر سرد قصصهم وذكرياتهم مستخدماً الصورة كجزء من السرد.
يستحضر زيبالد هؤلاء الرجال أمام أعيننا فقط كي يجعلهم يتلاشون في "شوق إلى الإندثار"، ينتحر اثنان منهما ويموت الثالث في المنفى، وأما الرابع فلا يزال يعيش في ظلال البغض والحقد حتى بعد مرور أكثر من أربعين عاماً على وفاة والديه في ألمانيا النازية.
وعلى الرغم من أن أيّاً من أبطال الرواية لم يعش في معسكرات الإعتقال، إلا أنهم جميعاً ظلّوا مسكونين بآثار ما حملته ذاكرتهم عن تلك المعتقلات، عانوا جميعهم من الذنب والإكتئاب، وحتى بعد سقوط النازية بوقت طويل، وتحمَّل هؤلاء الأفراد المنفيين ذلك العذاب الذي تختزنه الذاكرة وما تتسبب به من إنهيارات عاطفية.
