هذه سبع دراسات عن المسرح المصرى، تتناول أعمالاً لخمسة كتاب رأيت أنها تعالج قضايا ادبية الوقوف عندها.
الدراسة الأولى تدور حول مسرحية "عقيله" التى كتبها بيرم التونسى عام1931 أثناء نفيه فى فرنسا، وهذه المسرحية نادرة لاتوجد منها سوى نسخة واحدة بخط مؤلفها، وهى نسخة الرقابة التى كانت تتبع وزارة الداخلية عند تقديم المسرحية. أما الدراسة الثانية فتتناول مسرح "صلاح عبد الصبور" وأحاول فيها أن أتوسع فى نقطة ذكرتها فى ثنايا كتابي "التراث فى مسرح صلاح عبد الصبور" لكنى لم أوفها حقها، لأني أعطيت الأولوية فى هذا الكتاب للزاوية الترائية.. وهذه النقطة تتعلق بتاثير "لوركا" فى كاتبنا المسرحى الكبير.
وفى الدراسة الثالثة، التى كتبتها- أساسا- لنشرة مهرجان المسرح التجريبى، أبرزت ملامح التجريب عند "صلاح عبد الصبور" من أولى مسرحياته حتى آخرها.. وأظن أن هذه الدراسة، والدراسة السابقة عليها تكملان- مع كتابي عن التراث فى مسرح "صلاح عبد الصبور"- رؤيتى لأعمال هذا الكاتب الرائد.
وقد خصصت الدراستين الرابعة والخامسة لنخبة من أعمال "نعمان عاشور" وقمت فى أولاهما بقراءة جديدة لعدد من الأعمال الاجتماعية ذات المكانة فى تاريخنا المسرحى، أما الدراسة الثانية فقد وقفت فيها عند المسرحية التسجيلية مرة، والفانتازيا أخرى.
وفى الدراستين الأخيرين قدمت رؤية لنصين شعريين، يمثل كل منهما المحاولة الأولى لصاحبه فى مجال الدراما، وأردت من خلال مناقشة النصين أن أبين الفرق بين التعبير بالتراث والتعبير عن التراث وقد استخدمت المنهج المقارن فى معظم هذه الدراسات، كما استخدمت المنهج الاجتماعى فى أكثر من دراسة، واهتممت- إلى جوار هذين المنهجين- باستخدام المنهج الجمالى الذى يرى ضرورة بيان جماليات النص.
