ارتبطت إشكالية تأصيل الخطاب المسرحي العربي في أذهان كثير من المسرحيين العرب بالتراث، وكان طبيعياً أن تبرز لديهم ثنائية لأصالة والمعاصرة بوصفهما تحققان وحدة باطنية عضوية تعبر عن الرؤية المعاصرة للتراث التي تفرض علينا أن نتعامل معه كمواقف وحركة مستمرة من شأنها أن تسهم في تطوير التاريخ وتغييره نحو القيم الإنسانية المثلى، لا أن تقتصر نظرتنا للتراث على أنه مادة خام تنتمي إلى الماضي الذي انتهت وظيفته.
إن هذا الكتاب يتناول الأبعاد الرؤيوية لتجارب هامة من المسرح العربي على صعيدي النص والعرض، والتي حاولت خلق حالة من التوازن الجمالي والمعرفي بأدوات وأسلوب تمكن من الوصول إلى جوهر العملية الإبداعية، ضمن رؤية خلاقة تشترط إكتشاف القوانين الموضوعية التي تحرك الواقع السياسي والإجتماعي والبيئي الذي يعيش فيه المبدع، ومن ثم تتفاعل هذه العوامل والقوانين مع العصر في إطاره وصراعاته وديمومته، عبر عملية إبداعية تقوم على الفهم الموضوعي للذاكرة التراثية، وتفسيرها ضمن سياقات متعددة يمكن من خلالها نقد الحاضر في ضوء معطيات الماضي، وتحقيق رهان الحداثة والتجديد، التي من شأنها الوقوف في وجه المحاولات الرامية إلى طمس الهوية العربية الإسلامية، وترسيخ قيم فكرية وفنية وجمالية تتجاوز التقليد والإستنساخ المبرمج للمنتج المسرحي الغربي، وذلك بهدف تأسيس حوار نقدي جدلي يقوم على تعميق ثنائية الأصالة والمعاصرة، والأنا والآخر، في محاولة لتأصيل المسرح العربي.
