يحاول المؤلف إلقاء الضوء على التصوف في حضرموت، وعلى أهم روافده الفكرية في القرن العاشر من خلال دراسة حياة وشعر الشيخ عمر بن عبد الله بامخرمة السيباني. هذه الشخصية الصوفية كان لها أثرها الكبير في عصرها والعصور اللاحقة بعدها. ويعد صاحبها الشيخ عمر بن عبد الله بن أحمد بامخرمه الجوهي السيباني الهجراني (952هـ)، من كبار شيوخ التصوف، وصاحب مكانة مرموقة عند الصوفية في حضرموت، وعلى الرغم من هذه المكانة التي يتبوأه الشخي عمر بامخرمة، إلا أنه لم يحظ بأدنى عناية من الباحثين، ولم يُعثر على دراسة مستقلة تعنى بهذه الشخصية، اللهم إلا ما قد يأتي من ذكر عارض لها خلال كتابة تاريخ دولة آل كثير في عصر السلطان بدر بن عبد الله الكثيري الملقب (بأبي طويق) أو ترجمة مختصرة لها في ذكر أعلام القرن العاشر.
وقد انقسمت الدراسة إلى مقدمة وثلاثة أقسام هي مدخل البحث وبابين. يتحدث المؤلف في المدخل عن التصوف ومصادره ونشأته في حضرموت. الباب الأول يتناول نشأة الشعر الصوفي وفنونه المتنوعة كالمناجاة والاستغاثات والأوراد والأذكار والمدائح النبوية، وتأثير الحب الإلهي في شعر الصوفية، وأسلوب الرمز ومصطلحات القوم، وتعريف السماع والسماع الصوفي في حضرموت والشعر (الحميني) وأغاني الدّان الحضرمي. الباب الثاني كان الاهتمام فيه منصباً على الكشف عن حياة الشيخ عمر بامخرمة ومنهجه الصوفي والمصادر الفكرية في تصوفه من خلال شعره، وهذا الباب يمثل الجانب الموضوعي من الدراسة التي اختتمت بمختارات من شعر بامخرمة.
