الثعالبي هو أبو منصور عبد الملك بن محمد بن إسماعيل النيسابوري، لقب بالثعالبي نسبة إلى حرفته الأولى، إذ كان فراء يخيط جلود الثعالب، فسمى بذلك.
احترف الثعالبي لفترة مهنة تأديب الصبيان، ثم تركها لما اتصل بالملوك، وأعيان زمانه، فكتب وأهدى إليهم عدداً من مصنفاته، وكان من بينهم، أبو العباس، مأمون بن مأمون، حاكم خوارزم، وكان ذواقاً محباً للأدب، فصنف له الثعالبي عدداً من مؤلفاته.
وهو أديب وشاعر ومؤلف، صاحب التصانيف الأدبية السائرة في الدنيا. نبغ في تصنيف الكثير من الكتب، من أشهر كتبه "يتيمة الدهر في محاسن أهل العصر" في أربعة أجزاء وهو أكبر كتبه وأحسنها وأجمعها. ولعل أفضل فصول هذه الموسوعة الأدبية: ما كتبه عن المتنبي بعنوان "أبو الطيب المتنبي ماله وما عليه".
رأينا أن نخرجه في كتاب مستقل تعميماً للفائدة.
