هذا الكتاب هو وقفة منهجية من منظور سيميولوجي لتفسير مستويات المعنى في العرض المسرحي لعملين مسرحيين يعد كل منهما علامة بارزة في الإبداع العام (هاملت) لــ "شكسبير" و (السلطان الحائر) لــ "توفيق الحكيم" ، ولأن قراءة العلامة المسرحية في العرض تختلف عن قرائتها في النص، ولأن قراءة النص المسرحي قراءة إخراجية تفسيرية تختلف عن قراءتها قراءة إجراجية تفكيكية، لذا وجدت ضرورة الكشف عن دور العلامة المسرحية في تفسير المعنى الكلي للنص وللعرض المسرحي مع الأخذ في الإعتبار تفاوت المعنى الكلي الذي يصل إلى جمهور العرض الواحد من ليلة عرض إلى أخرى، خاصة وأن هذا التوجه نحو دراسة دور العلامات في تفسير معنى النص أو العرض مفتقد في دراساتنا المسرحية كما أنها لا تعدو أن تكون كتابات نظرية وترجمات لدراسات أجنبية، ومن ناحية أخرى فهي لا تتعدى حدود نقل النظرية السيميولوجية في علاقاتها بالمسرح دون أن تؤكد نفسها بالتطبيقات.
