إذا كان النظر فى المناهج وما أبدعته العقلية الإسلامية فيها سيقودنا بالضرورة إلى الماضي وهو ماضى تليد عريق جدي بالفخر والاعتزاز ولمنه لا يكفى وحده للمعاصرة وإقامة النهضة فقد كان علينا تحقيقا للمعاصرة ان نقرن هذا بالنظر العميق فى العصر الذى نعيش فيه وهو العصر الذى وصف بأنه عصر العلم والتقنية، وقد عقد هذا المؤتمر لتحقيق عدة أهداف منها. - إلقاء المزيد من الضوء على ما توصل إليه المسلمون من مناهج فى فروع العلم المختلفة، دون تكرار للجهود السابقة. - تأكيد الروابط الوثيقة بين العلم التجريبى والفلسفة التى نشا هذا العلم فى رحابها ثم انفصل عنها لكنه وجد نفسه مضطرا الى العودة إليها مرة أخرى كى تعاونه فى تقديم الحلول لما يواجهه من مشكلات يعجز بحسب منهجه عن حلها. - الكشف عن تخوم العلم المعاصرة وبحوثه المتطورة فى ميادين الفيزياء والفلك والبيولوجيا وعلوم الاتصال.
