تعد ظاهرة العنف من الظواهر القديمة التي ارتبطت ببدايات التاريخ، بل أن العنف قد ارتبط في البداية بنشأة الكون، وإذا كان العنف قديمًا قد ارتبط بوجود أفراد، أو حتى جماعات متصارعة ، فإنه في الوقت الحاضر أخذ يتستر وراء مؤسسات أو أيديولوجيات تكتسب قبولًا واضحًا في المجتمع، الأمر الذي جعله وسيلة مستخدمة للصراع الاجتماعي في إطار الواقع المعاش. إذن فالمشكلة ليست في وجود العنف ذاته فهو موجود بوجود الإنسان. وإنما تكمن المشكلة في اتساع مساحة ممارسات العنف وازدياد أشكاله وفي كافة المراحل العمرية التي يمر بها الإنسان وخاصة في بداية المراهقة، والعنف دائمًا وأبدًا مصاحبًا للإنسان بل وضاربًا بجذوره في التكوين النفسي للإنسان، وفي أنماط احتياجاته وغرائزه، أي في طبيعته البيولوجية، حيث يصل الإنسان إلى العالم مخلوقًا ضعيفًا لا يملك من مقومات الحياة سوى أجهزة بدنية في حاجة دائمة إلى النمو، والعناية، والتدريب. وهو بجانب ذلك يملك- كما يملك البالغ الكبير- بعض الدوافع الداخلية بحيث تصبح جميع أنواع سلوكه استجابة لهذه الدوافع، والتي ترجع إلى تكوينه البيولوجي.
ومن هنا فمدرسة التحليل النفسي تركز على حافزين بيولوجيين فطريين، هما حافز الجنس الذي يستهدف حفظ النوع، وحافز العدوان الذي يستهدف حفظ الفرد، وعلى ذلك فهناك صراع دائم بين الحاجة المستمرة لإشباع الدوافع وبين ما تقتضيه ظروف الواقع.
