يعتبر الاهتمام بالأطفال في أي مجتمع اهتمامًا بمستقبل هذا المجتمع بأسره، ويقاس مدى تقدم المجتمعات ورقيها بمدى اهتمامها بالأطفال والعناية بهم ودراسة مشكلاتهم والعمل على حلها. وتعد التوحدية لغزًا محيرًا لكثير من علماء النفس، والتربية. بل أن العديد من الفلاسفة قد بدأوا أيضًا في دراسة هذه الظاهرة ووضع تساؤلات مختلفة، مثل هل هناك علاقة بين السلوك الإنساني للطفل التوحدي، والسلوك الحيواني؟ أم أن التوحدية باختصار، هي استعراض للسلوك البدائي الموجود عند الفرد، والذي تخفيه مظاهر الحضارة منذ التنشئة الاجتماعية، والترويض البشري الذي يحدث حتى سن السادسة. لذا اهتمت العديد من الدراسات الحديثة بالطفل التوحدي، خاصة في السنوات الأخيرة، حتى أننا نجد أغلب دوريات علم النفس في الخارج أخذت في إعداد مقالات متخصصة عن هذه العينة من الأطفال. ويعد السلوك المضطرب من أهم وأخطر المشكلات لدى الأطفال التوحديين حيث أنه يحد من فاعلية وكفاءة البرامج التدريبية والتأهيلية ويمتد أثره أيضًا على مستوى تفاعل الأطفال التوحديين خارج إطار المراكز والمؤسسات الخاصة التي يتم تأهيلهم بها. وتمتد آثار هذا الاضطراب لتؤثر على مستوى التوافق النفسي والاجتماعي لدى الطفل التوحدي حيث تظهر لديه ضروب من عدم القدرة على التوافق والتكيف مع المواقف، والمتغيرات التي يواجهها، مهما كانت بسيطة، الأمر الذي يؤثر تأثيرًا سلبيًا على مستوى التوافق لديهم، سواء كان ذلك على المستوى النفسي أو الاجتماعي.
