لم يكن يتصور أن ظروفاً كتلك سوف تدخله السجن، فمنذ دخل الحياة العامة وهو يحسب حساباته بدقة إلا في هذه المرة. فقد أحس النقمة الشعبية في كل مظهر من مظاهر الحياة.. العمال.. الموظفون.. الطلبة.. المزارعون.. كلهم يتهامسون في مواقعهم.. الرشوة والفساد في كل المرافق دليل على أن الحكومة في مأزق وكان بحسه الاجتماعي وذكائه الذي اكتسبه من معاملاته الاقتصادية يعلم أن الربح هو ثمن المغامرة وأن الفائز هو الذي يمتطي الحصان الرابح.. لقد بدأ يفكر في السلطة منذ أن اشتد ساعده الاقتصادي. إذ أدرك أن المال بدون قوة تحميه سراب في كف عفريت وهكذا انضم إلى صفوف المعارضة الخفية.. تلك التي تعيش- دائماً- وراء الكواليس. وقامت المعارضة بلعبتها الخطرة وافتضح أمرها في حركة هزيلة لم يستغرق دحرها أكثر من ساعات وكان اسمه في أول السطور مرشحاً وزيرا للمالية ولم يكن يعلم أن مجرد الترشيخ سوف يخضع جانبا من أمواله للحراسة وجانباً آخر للمصادرة وستقطع الحكومة لنفسها نصيب الأسد تحت شعار التهرب من الضرائب.
كان ذلك كارثة بالنسبة إليه، فقد رأى أن آماله تنهار في لعبة لم يحسنها جيداً أو لعله لم يتخذ لنفسه فيها شيئا من الحذر. وهاهو بعد أن كان نجماً من نجوم المجتمع أصبح نزيل غرفة مظلمة في سجن مهجور يشاركه جماعة ممن يسمون أنفسهم سجناء سياسيين.
