هذا الكتاب على رغم تزايد أهمية المعجم في النظرية اللغوية، فإنه لا يتوفر لدينا الآن أي دراسة تقدم عرضاً شاملاً للتوجهيات النظرية الرئيسية المهمة في مجال علم الدلالة المعجمي. لذا يحاول هذا الكتاب سد هذه الثغرة بتقديم أهم مذاهب البحث في دراسة معاني المفردات في اللغويات من منظور تاريخي، متتبعاً ظهور علم الدلالة المعجمي. وتطوره بدءاً من منتصف القرن التاسع عشر حتى وقتنا هذا. وقد بني هذا الكتاب على بحث سابق نشر باللغة الهولندية عام 1986، وقد تضمن ذلك البحث مسحاً تاريخياً شاملاً لعلم الدلالة المعجمي على غرار ما يقدم في هذا الكتاب إلى حد كبير. لكن هذا العلم ازدهر وتقدم منذ ذلك الوقت سواء في هيكله أو في تفاصيله. وكتابنا هذا يعكس التطور الذي حدث خلال العشرين سنة الماضية مما يجعله مختلفاً عن البحث الأصلي.
وعلى الرغم من أن الجهود البحثية خلال العقود الثلاثة الماضية أسهم في تطوير نظرية النموذج الأساس وعلم الدلالة التاريخي فإن هذا الكتاب لا يعدو كونه موجزاً لأبرز مذاهب البحث ومشاربه دون تفضيل لأحدها على الآخر. غير أنه في الوقت نفسه لا يخلو من نظرة شخصية واضحة لعلم الدلالة المعجمي وتطوره. والأكاديمية الحديثة للكتاب الجامعي لا تملك إلا أن تتوجه بالشكر والعرفان لجامعة الأميرة نور بنت عبد الرحمن وكرسي البحث فيها لإقدامها على ترجمة هذا العمل العظيم الذي يهم المتخصصين والباحثين عن درر اللغة في المكتبة العربية، وشكراً وعرفاناً لفريق الترجمة ولعالمنا الجليل الأستاذ الدكتور محمد العبد الذين بذلوا جهداً مضاعفاً لإخراج هذا العمل في صورته المشرفة نحن شهداء عليه.
