إن علم الدلالة المعجمي، موضوعه هو معاني الألفاظ، وهذا الموضوع وإن كان من إختصاص اللسانيات، فإن أحوال الألفاظ وتصرفاتها من الوجهة السيمانطيقة كانت قد أُهملت من دون حق في الآداب الجارية الآن، مما كان قد نزع إلى إيلاء الإهتمام والتشديد على دلالة الجملة وعلاقتها بالأنساق الصورية الشكلية للمنطق.
وفي هذا الكتاب يثبت الأستاذ كروس، على أساس طريقة منتظمة حقائق وصفية ومعممة حول العلاقات المعجمية التي ينبغي أن تحيط بها كل نظرية صورية للسيمانطيقا.
ومن بين الموضوعات التي تشملها هذه النظرية، نجد دراسة التراكيب المسكوكة، وباب الغموض والإبهام، والترادف والتضمين وضروب التصنيف وأقسام الكل وأجزائه، وأنواع التراب، ومختلف أنماط تقابل الألفاظ، وتحديد المكون الإستبدالي في علاقاته المفصلة، وفوق كل ذلك، كانت مناقشة هذا الأستاذ كروس، قائمة على أمثلة توضيحية رائعة.
ومع أن الإستئناس بالنحو الكلاسيكي مطلوب في مثل هذا العمل فإن كل قارئ غير متدرب على تقنية أسس اللسانيات، سيجد عرض كروس في متناول يده، وبمعنى آخر فإن كل مهتم بالسمنطيقا، سيجد بغيته في هذا النص الأصيل، وسيستفزه منظور هذا الحقل الجديد.
