يندرج مسعى هذا الكتاب في إطار مشروع عريض ينحني على إعادة الإعتبار لما يعتبره البعض، عادة، مهملاً وغير ذي شأن، على الطفيف والصغير في الحياة عموماً وفي الثقافة البصرية العربية خصوصاً. ومثلما إنحني الشاعر المعروف شاكر لعيبي، باحثاً، في عدة أعمال تأملية أخرى وقدم طروحات جريئة في كتابيه: "الفن الإسلامي والمسيحية العربية"، و "العمارة الذكورية"، ها هو يقدم في هذا الكتاب، بروح الباحث الذي تحركه بالأصل هواجس الشاعر ومغامراته المعرفية، دراسة مكثفة عن إشكالية الفن لدى العلامة عبد الرحمن ابن خلدون.
إحدى فرضيات الكتاب تقوم على اساس أن ابن خلدون يقدم تصوراً براجماتيكياً لمدينة فاضلة مكتملة، قدرها النمو ثم الشيخوخة ثم الموت، لكنها مدينة مرسومة بخطوط سوداء وبيضاء تقريباً، وسكانها لا يستطيعون إلا القيام بحرفة واحدة مستجيبين، ككائنات ثابتة وسليبة، لشرطى الإنحطاط أو الإزدهار للمدينة من دون إرادة واضحة من طرفهم، مُلبين إحتياجات خارجية لأنهم تقريباً من دون إحتياجات روحية بل محض عقلية. التأنق والرفاهية والسلوك الراقي وحرف الترف هي إنعكاس لإزدهار براني. لا يطرد ابن خلدون أحداً من المدينة (إلا النساء اللواتي لم يقل شيئاً عن أدوار ممكنة لهن فيها)، فلكل دوره ومساره الدقيق؛ الصنائع والدين والسحر والعلوم الصرف والآداب. غيرأنه، وهو يري عدم الإمكانية لمدينة لا "احتياجات تشكيلية" عميقة فيها، يعترف في لحظات نادرة من المقدمة بروعة وبهاء الخلق الفني ولذته، متوصلاً إلى وصف تخريمات الأشكال المجسمة بأنها: "قطع الرياض المنمنمة"، ووصف الخط الرفيع: ب"جمال الرونق وحسن الرواء". مثل هذه التعبيرات النادرة تُقرأ بصفتها أريحية واستجابة للجميل غير معودين من طرفه، وليس فكراً فلسفياً جمالياً واعياً.
