ويبين المؤلف أن التصنيف كان موجوداً منذ القدم لدى الشعوب والحضارات القديمة إلى جانب العديد من العلوم القديمة كالفلك والرياضيات والكيمياء والهندسة، وذلك بحكم تفاعل الإنسان مع الطبيعة المحية به والبيئة التي يعيش فيها بما تحتويه من نباتات وحيوانات، فكانت تصانيفه تقوم على الوصف والمقارنة إعتماداً على الحواس والفطرة.
إنه مادة علمية تضع الأسس لأنثروبولوجيا العلم الذي يدرس نشوء كل علم وتطوره التاريخي قبل وصوله إلى شكله المعاصر المعترف به والمكرس في الأكاديميات والجامعات ومراكز الأبحاث.
كما يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى إنزال علم التصنيف من برجه العاجي الأكاديمي وجعله متاحاً للناس العاديين وذلك لكونه يهم شريحة واسعة من الباحثين في مجال إكتشاف الحيوانات والنباتات غير معروفة سابقاً والتي يجب تصنيفها وفهرستها، والعاملين في مجال النباتات المستخدمة في الصناعات الغذائية والدوائية والتجميلية، وغيرها.
