لم يعرف العرب الكتاب قبل الإسلام، إذ كانوا، في معظمهم، قبائل تتناحر فيما بينها، وتنتقل في الصحارى وبين الأقاليم سعياً وراء الماء والعشب.
وكان للإسلام الفضل الكبير في تحضرهم وجعلهم أمة رائدة في نشر الدين القويم والثقافة الإسلامية، ونظراً إلى شدة التقدير الذي يكنها الإسلام للعلم وللعلماء، ونظراً إلى الحاجة الملحة في تفسير آيات القرآن الكريم أو معرفة إعجازه وعلومه، انتشرت الكتب بينهم انتشاراً كبيراً.
وإن كان ثمة أمم قد سبقت العرب في تأليف الكتب، وخاصة المعاجم والموسوعات، فإن العرب سرعان ما عوضوا هذا النقص، فأكثروا من التأليف.
وإن كنا لا نعرف عندهم الموسوعات بالمعنى الدقيق لهذه الكلمة، فإن لهم بعض المؤلفات الموسوعية العامة والخاصة وخصوصاً في الدين والأدب والتاريخ.
ولكن، وبما يؤسف له، إن العرب، في هذا العصر الحديث، لم يصدروا بعد الموسوعات التي تليق بحضارتهم وتاريخهم وتراثهم، فهم متخلفون جداً في هذا المضمار، ولا نرى عندهم سوى موسوعات مترجمة عن الموسوعات الغربية أجري فيها بعض التعديل، وما كان أحرى بالمنظمة العربية للتربية والثقافة والعلوم أن تقوم بإصدار موسوعة عربية ضخمة تتلاءم مع عصرنا الذي نعيش فيه، ومع تراثنا العظيم وماضينا المشرف.
ولعل هذا الكتاب هو أول كتاب في الموسوعات العربية، قديمها وحديثها، وقد قسم إلى خمسة أبواب، على النحو التالي: الباب الأول: بين الموسوعة والمعجم. الباب الثاني: الموسوعات العربية القديمة العامة. الباب الثالث: الموسوعات العربية القديمة المتخصصة. الباب الرابع: الموسوعات العربية الحديثة العامة. الباب الخامس: الموسوعات العربية الحديثة المتخصصة.
وقد اتبع كل ذلك بملحق أثبت فيه بعض المواد من بعض موسوعاتنا لكي يطلع القارئ إطلاعاً عملياً عليها.
وليست غاية المؤلف من كتابه هذا الاستقصاء والإسهاب في وصف موسوعاتنا ونقدها، ولولا ذلك لجاء الكتاب في أضعاف حجمه، لكنه وضع هذا الكتاب تلبية لحاجة طلاب كلية الآداب، ووفقاً لمنهاج مادة الموسوعات التي يدرسها.
