علم الحديث من العلوم الشريفة التي اعتنى بها المسلمون الأوائل، حتى بلغوا بها أعلى المراتب وقد وقف علماء الأمة من القدماء والمحدثين جل حياتهم على تتبع آثار النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم وتدوين أحاديثه الشريفة، فكانت العناية منهم بكل علوم الحديث الشريف. والدارقطني هو أحد هؤلاء الأئمة الأعلام الذي سمت به همته إلى مراقي الجد والعمل، فانكب على تحصيل هذه العلوم والتصنيف والتأليف في فروعها وفنونها. وألف كتاب "سنن الدارقنطي" الذي احتوى على الكثير من الأحاديث التي اختصت بالطهارة والصلاة والزواج و الصوم والزكاة وغيرها الكثير. لقد جاء بذيل الكتاب "التعليق المغني على الدارقنطي" من تأليف المحدث أبي الطيب آبادي الذي تحدث عن كتابه هذا: "هذه تعليقات شتى علقتها على السنن للإمام علي بن عمر بن أحمد الدراقطني وقت مطالعة ذلك الكتاب المبارك، اكتفى فيها على تنقيد بعض أحاديثه وبيان علله، وكشف بعض مطالبه على سبيل الإيجاز والاختصار، آخذاً من كتب هذا الفن المبارك. وسميتها (بالتعليق المغنى على سنن الدراقطني).
وقد ألحق بالكتاب مجلدين احتويا على القسمين الأول والثاني من فهرس أحاديث وآثار سنن الدراقطني من إعداد مجموعة من المؤلفين.
