إن المشتغل بعلم الحديث يلمس صعوبة في العثور عليه في مصادره، ويصرف الأوقات الطويلة، والجهود المضنية في ذلك، لذا فقد نهض العلماء قديماً وحديثاً، وتناولوا أشهر كتب السنة، ووضعوا لها الفهارس المساعدة. وفي هذا الكتاب فهرسة لسنن الدارقطني التي عمل على وضعها الدكتور يوسف مرعشلي، لما لهذه السنن من أهمية كبيرة عند عن أهل الحديث.
وقد اعتمد في تنظيم هذا الفهرس (النظام الألفبائي القلمي) الذي تعتبر فيه حروف الكلمة الواحدة، مثل: (إذا مسّ) تأتي في الترتيب قبل (أذاب)، خلافاً لـ(الترتيب الألفبائي الحرفي) وقد آثر المرعشلي هذا الترتيب لأنه يجمع كلمات المادة الواحدة في مكان واحد. إلى جانب ذلك فقد اعتمد وضع المعجم المفهرس لألفاظ وأحاديث سنن الدارقطني في جزء مستقل باسم "المعجم المفهرس لألفاظ الحديث النبوي في سنن الدارقطني".
