تبرز أهمية هذا الكتاب في كونه فهرساً لسنن الدار قطني الذي لا تكاد مكتبة في بيت ولحاجة طالب العلم الشريف إليه، عدا باحث ومحقق ومخرّج.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك، وهو الأهم، أنه يسهل عناء البحث عن الأحاديث ليس من المستطاع إيجادها في مظانّها، ويسدّ ثغرة في المكتبة الإسلامية وعلى وجه الخصوص فيما يتعلق بالكتب المفهرسة للحديث إذ أن الباحث يجد المعجم المفهرس للحديث وغيره لا يتطرق لسنن الدار قطني، وحتى يكون ميسراً يوفي بالغرض المطلوب كان لا بد من فهرسة جميع الأحاديث والآثار القولية والفعلية وترتيبها حسب حروف المعجم أولاً، ثم ترتيب أحاديث كل صحابي على حدة حسب حروف المعجم أيضاً.
وقد جاءت خطة الفهرسة على النحو التالي: أولاً تثبيت طرق الحديث سواء كان قولياً أو فعلياً، ثانياً: إذا كان الحديث مشتملاً على قول أو فعل، تم وضع كليهما، كلاًّ على حدة، ثالثاً: تم وفي حال الأحاديث التي توافقت أطرافها، زيادة على طرف بعضها وصولاً إلى فارق، رابعاً: تجزئة الأحاديث التي اشتملت على عدّة أحكام حسب أحكامها، خامساً: إثبات اسم راوي الحديث بعد طرفه، وأيضاً اسم الكتاب الذي ورد فيه أو الباب أو كليهما أن وجدا، سادساً: وضع عدد مرات تكرر الحديث فوق رقم الصفحة بحرف حاشية، وذلك عند تكرره في صفحة واحدة عن راوٍ واحدة، بالإضافة إلى إجراءات أخرى ساهمت جميعها في أن يأتي هذا الفهرس على هذا الشكل المعلمي الممنهج ليجعله في مصاف كتب فهارس الأحاديث والآثار القيمة، معنىً ومبنى.
