ألف هذا الكتاب الدكتور وليم ثيودور سترانك معتمداً على الوثائق الأجنبية وبشكل خاص على الوثائق البريطانية.
وقد امتاز الكتاب بالإحاطة الكاملة بالموضوع بالرغم من أن الفترة الزمنية التي تناولها المؤلف طويلة من 1897-1935، والمساحة المكانية واسعة أيضاً لم تقتصر على عربستان بل امتدت لتشمل فارس وروسيا وتركيا وبريطانيا وهي دول تكالبت كلها على شط العرب والخليج العربي.
وأجاد المؤلف في تصوير أمير المحمرة الشيخ خزعل بن جابر الذي استلم إمارة قبيلته بعد مقتل أخيه مزعل بن جابر، وكان الشيخ خزعل شخصية مميزة، فهو عربي أصيل متمسك بعروبته ومبادئه وتقاليد القبائل العربية، ويتمتع بذكاء خارق، وقدرة على الحوار.
وقف في وجه الفرس الذين عملوا بكل إمكانياتهم لجعل عربستان فارسية، وأصرّ على عروبة بلاده التي حكمها ولم يترك فرصة تفوته، ولا طريقة تفيده إلا استغلها حتى أضحى شوكة في أعين الحكام الفرس فترة طويلة من الزمن. وتعاطف البريطانيون مع الشيخ خزعل وأغدقوا له الوعود البراقة، وراقته تلك الوعود فاشتد عوده، واتسعت آماله، إلا أن المؤامرات الخارجية كانت أكبر منه ومن قدراته، فأودت به إلى الضعف، وتمزقت عرى قبيلته.
أخيراً وبمؤامرة استطاع الفرس من أسر الشيخ ونقله إلى طهران، حيث أصبح سجيناً وسلبوه أملاكه كلها، ولم يرحموا شيخوخته ومرضه حتى فقد إحدى عينيه، وضعف بصر العين الأخرى، فتوفي رحمه الله سنة 1936م.
مات الشيخ خزعل، لكن التاريخ لم ينس أن يكتب عنه صفحات ناصعة لا تنسى.
