النهضة هي الإشكالية المركزية في الفكر العربي الحديث والمعاصر، وقد طرح شعار (النهضة) من جديد بعد هزيمة (1967م)، وبعد أن هيمن شعار (الثورة) في الخمسينيات والستينيات من القرن الماضي، كما أن فشل الأنظمة العربية المستمر في تحقيق أهداف النهضة العربية، وما استجد من تحديات العولمة، وما صاحبها من مشروعات تأتي من خارج الوطن العربي مثل: مشروع الشرق الأوسطي الكبير في بداية التسعينات، إضافة إلى ما يقدمه الاتحاد الأوروبي من اقتراحات وبرامج في إطار التعاون الأورومتوسطي، أو ما يعرف بإعلان (برشلونة) عام (1995م) وفي سياق ما يسمى مكافحة (الإرهاب) تزايدت الدعوات من الخارج والداخل للتغيير والإصلاح؛ كل العوامل السابقة جعلت من مشروع النهضة دفاعاً عن الوجود والهوية، وليس اختياراً من أجل التقدم والوحدة ومواجهة الطغيان الداخلي والخارجي فحسب.
كان من أسباب اختيار دراسة النهضة في فكر حسن حنفي والجابري، اعتبار مشروعهما من أهم وأشمل المشروعات العربية الفكرية المعاصرة؛ فقد ورثا ونقدا التراث والتيارات العربية الحديثة والمعاصرة لهما، إلى جانب انتمائهما إلى تيارين فكرين مختلفين، فحسن حنفي ينتمي إلى اليسار الإسلامي، والجابري ينتمي إلى التيار القومي العربي الجديد، فهما يمثلان الموقف الفكري لهذين التيارين، إضافة إلى أنهما تبنيا التنظير للثقافة والفكر (تحليل الشعور الجمعي وتأويل المخزون النفسي، وتحليل البنية العقلية) كمدخل للإصلاح والنهضة.
