يضم هذا الكتاب مجموعة من المقالات لمفكرين غربيين عالجوا الموضوع بحيادية تامة إذ يرى الفيلسوف الفرنسي بوديارد أن الغرب هو الذي يعلن الحرب على نفسه، وإذا كان مفجرو أحداث 11 سبتمبر هم الذين ارتكبوا الفعلة فلأن الغرب (أمريكا) هم الذين أرادوها. إنها العولمة المنتصرة تخوض صراعاً مع ذاتها. ويتحدث جاك جوليا عن انفجار النزعة الفكرية المعادية لأميركا في كل أنحاء العالم. بينما يتساءل أمبرتو إيكو عما إذا كانت الحرب هي الشكل العادل للعنف وهي يمكن للمواجهة التي نشهدها أن تتحول إلى صراع أو ثقافات. وهو يتصور سيناريو خيال علمي لما سيحدث عند نشوب الحرب بين الشرق والغرب حيث يعتقد أن مصالح ومتطلبات القوى المتصارعة ستكون من الداخل ضمن بكرة لا يمكن فك خيوطها دون تدميرها. غير أن الحرب الشاملة في عصر العولمة مستحيلة بنظره، أي أنها قد تكون هزيمة للجميع ويتساءل جاك دريدا عما تؤول إليه مفاهيم كالعقل والديمقراطية وكذلك مفاهيم كالسياسة والحرب والإرهاب عندما يفقد الشبح القديم لسيادة الدولة صدقيته.
