الكتاب في إعتقادي مذكرات لسيرة رجل يمثل، بكل ما فيه، المثقف القروي، وإن شئت الريفي، وهو نمط للمثقف التقليدي المتسم بالنزعة المحلية والتي من سماتها محدودية التفكير؛ متأثرةً بقيم محيطها الضيق من عصبوية قبلية وغيرها؛ نظرتها برغماتية وديماغوغية؛ إنتفاعية ذات أهداف محدودة؛ متمذهب ومتأسلم؛ مولعة بالتأريخ ومنهجه الوصفي والسردي؛ يعاني من عقدة سلطة الدولة ويتوجسها؛ متمتع بالسكونية النسبية؛ رافض الحداثة؛ غير عضوي ولا يساهم بأواليات (ميكانزمات) صيرورات التغيير الإقتصادي والسياسي؛ عامية المفردات؛ يلعب العنف، بخاصة المادي، دوراً مهماً في حل إشكاليات الحياة؛ يميل غلى نصرة الغالب؛ بناءه النفسي غير متوازن؛ محدودية التخيل؛ لديه جشع في متع الحياة... وغيرها من السمات.
لقد أُستنبط أغلب هذه الصفات من هذا الكتاب (خير الله طلفاح، رجل الظل لصدام حسين) وهو يمثل خير تمثيل للمثقف القروي أو الريفي رغم مظهرة المتمدن، وهذا ما تميز به الكتاب دون أن يعي مؤلفه ما توصل إليه من إستنتاجات؟… وهنا المفارقة الجادة.
ومن ميزات الكتاب الأخرى أنه كان واعياً لبحثه بحيث أنه لم يضف شيئاً من ذاتيته، فالمرء يعرّي ولو بصورة غير واعية، ضيق خبرته ونواقصه الفكرية والمزاجية، وإن كان منحازاً لبحثه وليس الطعن بالشخصية المبحوثة بدليل أن الباحث لم يعمد إلى تنضيد الحقائق بما يناسب عواطفه وميوله.
