يدور موضوع الكتاب حول الفكر السياسي للمعلم كمال جنبلاط الذي شكل في عصره نقلة نوعية في المجال السياسي اللبناني وفي حياة أفراد المجتمع، إن من حيث رؤيته للنظام الديمقراطي، أو من حيث كون الحاكم ليس فوق القانون، أو إجبار من يخطىء للمحاسبة والمحاكمة حيث تشكل مقالات هذا الكتاب صورة عن الحياة السياسية في ستينيات القرن العشرين في لبنان بما هي سيرورة متواصلة تغتني وتتجدد بالعمل المتواصل والمقاومة الدائمة. ولكن بمعناها المدني اللاعنفي الذي أراده جنبلاط "وكان لا بد أن نمتشق سيف النضال، وأن نسير أمام شعب لبنان وأن نخوض ثورتين متواليتين - الإنقلاب السلمي اللاعنفي سنة 1952، والثورة الدامية سنة 1958، وأن نتحمل شتى ألوان الإضطهاد والحرمان مع فئة مناضلة خيرة، لكي نتخلص من أوضاع، يقشعر لها ضميرنا ويقف شعر رؤوسنا، عندما نذكر أننا اضطررنا أن نعيش وأن يعيش شعب لبنان في مثل هذه الأوضاع ..."، وبهذا المعنى تحضر في عموم (المقالات) التي يشتمل عليها الكتاب العدة الفكرية للمعلم، في مواجهة المشكلات المتراكمة والأزمات السياسية والقضايا الإجتماعية ومنها المطالبة بالضمان الإجتماعي ومقاومة الإحتكار وجشع الرأسماليين ورفع مستوى معيشة اللبنانيين "الإشتراكية في بدء عهدها وتطورها هي أحوج ما تكون للتعمير ولتوظيف الرساميل بشكل يتلاءم مع التصميم العام الموجه للبلاد"، وهكذا يكتب المعلم بمفردات عصره، لحظة التحول من الإستعمار السياسي، إلى الإستعمار الإقتصادي، وتوقع الخطر من المشاريع الإستعمارية "وأن لا مجال للتحول بهذه البلاد إلى مشاريع الإستعمار والدفاعات الإقليمية المجرمة. وأن من يشحذ السلاح فلينتظر الحرب. وأن لا مصلحة عامة إلا مصلحة لبنان أولاً وآخراً - أي مصلحة شعب لبنان".
يضم الكتاب مقالات سياسية للمعلّم كمال جنبلاط نشرت في دوريات محلية مثل "الأنباء" و "النهار" وغيرها، بالإضافة إلى خطب ألقاها في مناسبات مختلفة.
