فالح عبد الجبار، (مواليد بغداد 1946م - وتوفي يوم 26 فبراير 2018م في بيروت عاصمة لبنان)، عالم اجتماع عراقي، غادر العراق عام 1978. عمل أستاذًا وباحثًا في علم الاجتماع في جامعة لندن، مدرسة السياسة وعلم الاجتماع في كلية بيركبيرك، والتي كان قد حصل فيها على شهادة الدكتوراه. وقد عمل سابقا محاضرا في جامعة لندن الحضرية، ومنذ عام 1994 قاد مجموعة بحث المنتدى الثقافي العراقي في كلية بيركبيك. عمل سابقًا مديرا للبحث والنشر في مركز الدراسات الاجتماعية للعالم العربي التي يوجد مقرها في نيقوسيا وبيروت (1983-1990).
تخصص بدراسة الفكر السياسي والاجتماعي في الشرق الأوسط، وتتناول أعماله: الدين، ودور القانون، والصراع الديني، والمجتمع المدني.

يضم هذا الكتاب ثلاثة مباحث الأول، حول الحداثة واللاهوت في الفكر السياسي العربي، وبالذات عملية نزع العلمنة في الميدان السياسي، والثاني حول "الدولة المركزية" والثالث هو عرض حال للخرافات الشعبية، التي شارك بها بعض الوضعيين وكل الأصوليين حول مآل حرب الخليج.
المقالات الثلاث، بمعنى من المعاني، مستقل بعضها عن بعض، في أنها تعالج مواضيع منفصلة لها خصوصيتها أو منطقها الدافعي الخاص. ولكنها أيضاً متصلة، واتصالها قائم في أنها تعالج جذر المشكلة: نقص عملية تحديث الفكر السياسي العربي، بشقيه العلماني، والأصولي، رغم اختلاف أسلوب المعالجة بين عرض مجرد، وتناول سياسي يومي.
ويجد القارئ في المقال الأول، مقارنة تاريخية وجيزة بصدد تباين عملية التحديث الأوروبية عن نظيرتها العربية-الإسلامية. كما يجد في المقال الثاني، عرضاً وجيزاً لتشكل الدولة المركزية، عالمياً وعربياً، وتمايز النموذج العالمي عن النموذج العربي. ويركز المقال الثالث حول تجليات الميثولوجيا العربية في التفكير السياسي والعسكري، عارضاً نماذج منها في سياق معاينة وجيزة للتطور السياسي-الأيديولوجي لبعض النخب الحاكمة.
