في الفترة ما بين القرن الحادي عشر والقرن الثالث عشر حيث كانت أوروبا ترزح تحت نير الكنيسة وتتخبط في الظلام الفكري، كانت الإمبراطورية المغربية مركزاً حضارياً وعلمياً، تبدو وكأنها قابضة على وسائل الإستمرار في أمامية التقدم.
لكن المغرب وإن إستطاع الإحتفاظ ببعض مظاهر التقدمية لفترة دامت زهاء قرنين آخرين، فإنه في فجر القرن السادس عشر غدا يبدو للعيان وقد فإنه الركب الحضاري بمسافات صعبت ملاحقتها، بل إن مظاهر التخلف أخذت تتفاقم لحقب متوالية ظلت فيها البلاد تحت وطأة الغارات المسيحية الآتية من الغرب والتسللات العثمانية الآتية من الشرق.
هذه الحروب التي أكره عليها المغرب لرد الهجومات المتعاقبة عليه من أوروبا، بما كانت ترمي إليه من مطامع إستعمارية باطلة، قد شغلت دولة المغرب وأمته أزمنة طويلة عن القيام بما يتطلبه رقي الشعب في ميادين العلوم والتقنيات التي شادت عليها أوروبا حضارتها إنطلاقاً من القرن السادس عشر.
من خلال نتوءات هذا الواقع التاريخي، ولأسباب أخرى ذاتية سنحاول الوقوف عليها، ظلت الفكرة الإصلاحية في بلادنا تلاقي صعوبات جمة تجعل دعاة الإصلاح يجهدون فيكبون تحت تأثير الأحداث السياسية وما يصاحبها من إختلافات تطبع منهجية الفكر الإصلاحي في منظوره وتجسيده.
وقد اقتصرنا في سياقة هذا البحث المتواضع على فترة زمنية من تاريخ المفكر المغربي الناهض وهو يخوض مسألة الإصلاح والتحديث، لنحصرها في المرحلة ما بين سنة 1757 وسنة 1912 تاريخ سقوط المغرب تحت الحماية الأجنبية...
ذلك أن هذه المرحلة من تاريخ المغرب أفرزت أحداثاً سياسية وفكرية كان لها الأثر على مسار تطور بلادنا في مجال إكتشاف ذاتيتها وشعورها بالفجوة التي تبعدها عن مستوى التقدم، وتنذرها بأن الوقت قد حان للقيام بما يمكنها من ملاحقة الركب الحضاري الذي أخذ يتسع لكثير من البلاد الأخرى، عربية وغير عربية.
