يدرس هذا الكتاب القضايا الرئيسة في الموشحات الأندلسية، ويتتبع ما يتصل بها من مصطلحات عند القدماء والمعاصرين من عرب ومستشرقين، ويقدم تصور الباحث لدلالة بعض هذا المصطلحات.
ويتتبع ذلك دراسة الوزن في الموشحات، فالتجديد فيها بالدرجة الأولى هو في أوزانها، إذ تعد أول خروج منظم على قاعدة الوزن الواحد والقافية الواحدة يكتب له الذيوع والانتشار، ليس عند العرب فحسب، بل عند اليهود الذين نظموا موشحات تماثل الموشحات الأندلسية العربية.
ويعرض هذا الكتاب إلى أهمية الغناء في ظهور الموشحات، فالغناء وثيق الصلة بالشعر، وهذه العلاقة أكثر وضوحاً بين الموشحات والغناء، إذ إن الموشحات تتوجه بالدرجة الأولى الأسماع، ولم يستطع، حتى الذين رفضوا تدوينها في كتبهم المخلدة مثل ابن عبد ربه في العقد الفريد وابن بسام في الذخيرة، أن يخفوا ولعهم بسماعها وافتتناهم بذلك الغناء.
ويخلص هذا الكتاب إلى أن الموشحات عربية في لغتها وفي موضوعاتها وأوزانها، ولكن هذا الشعر طرأت عليه تحويرات طفيفة وفي رحلته الطويلة من موطنها الأصلي المشرق إلى أرض الأندلس الخضراء.
وقد يكون لزرياب وما أحدثه من تجديدات في الغناء وطرائق المساع أثر في ظهور الموشحات، أما السبب الأهم في ظهور الفن فيرجع إلى امتزاج الأجناس واللغات والأنغام في الأندلس، ولعل الموشحات في صورتها التي وصلتنا عليها صورة من ذلك الامتزاج.
