يبهجنا ويزعجنا أيّها القارئ الكريم أن تبلغ رحلة الحضارة التي لا نهاية لها نهايتها: أمّا الإبهاج فلأننا أنجزنا ما وعدنا بإنجازه، وهو تحويل قصة الحضارة المفصلة إلى أقصوصة مجملة، وأمّا الإزعاج فلأن بلوغ الطواف آخر يعني فصم صحبة يعزّ علينا أن نفصمها، بعدما تفيأنا ظلالها قروناً، امتدت من نحت الحجر بالحجر إلى إدارة المصنع بالبخار، وفي هذا الجزء الخاتم من الوجيز يرى القارئ فلسفة الغرب تنتقل من الأوهام إلى الحقائق، ودينه يخلع التعصب، وسياسته تكسر الأغلال، وفنّه يرتدّ عن المظهر إلى الجوهر، وفكره يوازن عقل فولتير بقلب روسو.
وإذا خُيَل إلى القارئ أن من العقوق والمروق الخروج من موكب التاريخ في لحظة إنفجار فاصلة، دمّرت الباستيل، فعليه أن يتعلّل بما راض به ديورانت نفسه، وهو تقبّل العجز والنقص، وطرح اليراع والطرس، وتركهما لعقول أنضر، وثقافة أغزر، ومهما يتوهّج عقل المؤرخ فهو إلى إنطفاء، ومهما يمتدّ به العمر فهو إلى فناء، إنه ليس أكثر من موجة عابرة، يجرفها نهر المعرفة العظيم.
وبعد أن ألقت الرحلة عصاها، واستقرَّ بها النوى لم يبق في جعبتنا شيئاً نفرغه في أذني القار إلا الشكر والتماس العذر: الشكر لطول صبره على صحبتنا في سفر متعب ممتع، والتماس العذر، لعله يتغمّد بعفوه وحلمه ما شاب عملنا من إرتجال وقصور.
