القهوة والشاي أكثر المشروبات إستهلاكاً في العالم بعد الماء، وللقهوة تاريخ طريق من حيث أساطير إكتشافها، والمعارك الأدبية والإجتماعية والشرعية التي مرت عليها لعدة قرون.
ففي بداية ظهور شرب القهوة حرَمها علماء الدين الإسلامي عدا الصوفية، فالصوفيون هم أول من أطلق اسم "القهوة" على شراب البن، ولهم الفضل الأول في إنتشار شرب القهوة في العالم، فالكتاب هذا (القهوة بين الطب والأدب) يستعرض بإيجاز التاريخ الطريف للقهوة أولاً، ثم يتفرع إلى قسمين: القهوة في الأدب، والقهوة في الطب، فالقسم الأدبي للترفيه والتسلية بما فيه من أشعار متعلقة بالقهوة، أما القسم الطبي فأكثر جدية وأقل تسليمة، لما يحتويه من معلومات حديثة عن علاقة شرب القهوة بالصحة.
فالقهوة مشروب مركب يحتوي على ما يزيد على ألف مادة نشطة بيولوجيّاً، والآثار الصحية لتناول القهوة بصورة مزمنة واسعة النطاق، فالقهوة في جرعات معتدلة لا تضر بالصحة.
ففي الكتاب الكثير من البيانات المتوافرة بشأن آثار إستهلاك القهوة في الصحة على المدى الطويل، مع بعض التركيز على صحة القلب والأوعية الدموية لأنها مجال تخصص الكاتب.
