السلطان سليمان هو السلطان العثماني العاشر الذي ظل على العرش أطول مدة بسلطنته التي استمرت ستة وأربعين عامًا (1520- 1566م)، وقد وصفت فترته من قبل المؤرخين العثمانيين بأنها: "أزهى عصر"، و"العصر الذهبي".
فقد وسعت الدولة العثمانية أراضيها في فترة سلطنته وخصوصًا نحو الغرب ووسط أوروبا. وعلاوة علي ذلك تم للمرة الأولى اتباع سياسة تسمي "ما وراء البحار" حيث أحرز العثمانيون تقدمًا سواءًا إلى شمال وغرب إفريقيا أو إلى سهوب شمال روسيا حتى وصلوا إلى المحيط الهندي.
ويعتبر السلطان سليمان الجد المؤسس لمهمة سياسية جديدة ظلت ميراثًا لورثته من بعده وأصبح ممثلًا لعصر يذكر دائمًا بالشوق والحسرة.
وقد تناول هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيديكم فترة حكم السلطان سليمان التي استمرت مدة طويلة وعالمه الشخصي ورجاله من حوله وبيئته... وكيف أنه كان صاحب توجه سياسي، كما تم تناول ودراسة سلسلة الأحداث التي عاشها هو بنفسه نقلًا عن المصادر المكتوبة ووثائق الأرشيف الخاصة بهذه الفترة مباشرة.ولما لم تدرس سيرته الذاتية إلى اليوم كوحدة متكاملة بشكل مفصل سنتعرض في هذا الكتاب لحياته، وأحداث عصره بأسلوب ميسرٍ وليس بلغة علمية رسمية. بيد أنه يجب أن أوضح أيضًا أن هذه المعلومات قد تم استخراجها من البداية من تواريخ الوقائع العثمانية ووثائق الأرشيف مباشرة.
ويجب أن أفصح كذلك أن هذا الكتاب هو الثمرة الأولى لدراسة ظللت أعمل فيها منذ سنوات طويلة. وإن شغف القارئ وتطلعه إلى الوصول إلى المعلومات الصحيحة بشأن السلطان سليمان كان هو أهم باعث في كتابة هذا الكتاب، وسوف يلاحظ بوضوح عند قراءة هذا الكتاب أن السلطان سليمان قضى عمره في العمليات العسكرية والحروب.
وإيمانًا بأن هذا العمل- موضوع البحث- الذي سينشر للمرة الأولى باللغة العربية سوف يصل إلى هدفه فإني أدين بالشكر للمسؤولين القائمين على طبع الكتاب.
