يتناول هذا الكتاب مقدمة وخمسة فصول: أما المقدمة: فقد تحدثت فيها عن (المجاز العقلي ومكانته من النظم البلاغي)، وأما الفصل الأول: فقد بحثت فيه (تدرج البحث العلمي للمجاز العقلي)، وقدمت لهذا الفصل بتمهيد، ذكرت فيه بعض بواكير النشأة العلمية لهذا المجاز، وأما الفصل الثاني: فقد تحدثت فيه عن (المجاز العقلي وازدهار البحث البلاغي) وقدمت لهذا الفصل بتمهيد ذكرت فيه أن المجاز العقلي ككل المباحث البلاغية ازدهر على يد الإمامين الجليلين عبد القاهر الجرجاني وجار الله الزمخشري، وأما الفصل الثالث: فقد تحدثت فيه عن (المجاز العقلي والاحتواء المنطقي للبلاغة)، وقدمت لهذا الفصل بتمهيد ذكرت فيه كيفية احتواء المنطق للبلاغة)، وأما الفصل الرابع: فقد تحدثت فيه عن (المجاز العقلي بين الأضواء والأهواء في الفكر الحديث)، وقدمت لهذا الفصل بتمهيد ذكرت فيه منابع هذه الأضواء والأهواء، وأما الفصل الخامس: فقد تحدثت فيه عن (كلمة ورأي في المجاز العقلي).
