المجاز ظاهرة لغوية لا تخص لغة دون لغة، ومنشأ هذه الظاهرة منوطٌ بالتطور اللغوي الذي يتناول قواعد اللغة وتركيب الجمل ومعنى الكلمات بالتغيير.
تتناول هذه الرسالة (المجاز في البلاغة العربية) لمؤلفها الدكتور مهدي صالح السامرائي البحث حول الظاهرة المجازية وتطور دراستها وذلك في عدة فصول. يشير الفصل الأول إلى أن الظاهرة المجازية ظاهرة عامة لا تخص لغة بعينها، وقد عرض المؤلف لتفسير هذه الظاهرة في ضوء التطور اللغوي، أما الفصل الثاني فيؤكد على الظاهرة المجازية تسبق في وجودها مرحلة البحث العلمي، فالظاهرة هي الأولى في الوجود، أما البحث فيها فلا يكون إلا في مرحلةٍ تالية عندما تتوفر جملة من البواعث لتحفيز العقول على الدراسة والنظر، وهي بواعث نشأت تحت تأثير قسم من آيات القرآن الكريم والأحاديث النبوية، وبتأثير اختلافات المذاهب والفرق الإسلامية. في الفصل الثالث بيان إذا ما كانت للثقافة الإغريقية أثر في البحث المجازي، وفي الفصل الرابع إشارة إلى أن الدراسة اللغوية للنصوص المجازية تسبق الدراسة الإصطلاحية لهذه النصوص بمراحل زمنية طويلة. وأما الفصل الخامس ففيه بحث عن بوادر الدراسة الإصطلاحية للنصوص المجازية، وتتبعها زمنياً من الجاحظ إلى غاية أبي الهلال العسكري. وفي الفصل السادس كرّس المؤلف بحثه لبيان المجاز عند الإمام عبد القاهر الجرجاني مبيّناً مدى التوسع الذي أحرزته الدراسة البيانية على يد هذا الإمام الجليل، فذكر نظرية "الإسناد" عنده، وأثرها في توجيه الدراسة المجازية إلى : مجاز عقلي، ومجاز لغوي، (...) وغيرها من مجاز الحذف والزيادة والإستعارة ... ومسائل أخرى ذات صلة.
