لا نعرف بداية الكتابات عن جدة سوى ما ورد في كتب البلدان والرحلات، ومن أوائل من كتب عن جدة الفاكهي - من علماء القرن الثالث الهجري - فقد وردت لديه شذرات عن جدة، تحت عنوان "ذكر جدة والتحفظ بها وبما فيها وأنها خزانة مكة.
وقد حوت رسالته هذه جل ما يتعلق بتاريخ جدة، فهي أوفى كا كتب في الموضوع، ومع احتوائها على أخبار لا تثبت أمام النقد إلا أن للحضراوي بعض الآراء الجيدة التي منها ملاحظته على الحكاية الخرافية التي ذكرها ابن المجاور في تاريخه عن انتقال أهل مدينة جدة من الفرس، وأن سبب ذلك غلط أحدهم بإرسال الضريبة المقررة لحاكم مكة، وهي حمل من حديد في كل عام، فأرسل بدل حمل الحديد حملاً من ذهب، مما دفع ذلك الحاكم إلى أن يتعنت في طلب الضريبة في العام التالي مماثلة لضريبة العام الذي قبله، فكان تعنته سبباً لانتقال التجار، وهي خرافة ما زال يرددها كل من كتب عن تاريخ هذه المدينة حتى عصرنا، ورغم ما أورده الحضراوي في رسالته من اعتقاده بتأثير الأولياء والصالحين، ورغم ما فيها من بعض أشياء يدرك كل قارئ عدم صحتها فإن الغاية من نشرها إيجاد مصدر جديد لتاريخ جدة.
