يقول الدكتور علي محمد الصلابي في المقدمة التي افتتح بها هذا الكتاب " فإن هذا الكتاب فصل من كتاب " أسمى المطالب في سيرة أمير المؤمنين علي بن ابي طالب رضي الله عنه " ورأيت نشره إلى إفراد وذلك لأهميته ولتعم الفائدة ، ونتحدث فيه عن فكر وانحراف الخوارج والشيعة ونشأتهم في عهد أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه ، وموقف أمير المؤمنين منهم ، ونزعاتهم في العصر الحديث ... " .
وفي هذا الإطار ، كتب المؤلف عن نشأة الخوارج وعرّف بهم ، وذكر الأحاديث النبوية التي تضمنت ذمهم ، وانحيازهم إلى حروراء ، ومناظرة إبن عباس لهم ، وسياسة أمير المؤمنين في التعامل معهم ، وأسباب مقاتلته لهم ، ونشوب القتال معهم ، وذكر قصة ذي الثدية أو المخدج ، وأثر مقتله على جيش الإمام علي ، كما وقف المؤلف على الأحكام الفقهية التي اجتهد فيها أمير المؤمنين عليّ في معاركه في الجمل وصفين ومع الخوارج ، وأوضح كيف اعتمد عليها الفقهاء ، فيما بعد ، ودونوها في كتبهم بما يُعرف بأحكام فقه البغاة ، وناقش بعض الآراء الإعتقادية للخوارج ، كرأيهم في الإمامة ، وطعنهم في بعض الصحابة وتكفيرهم لعثمان وعلي رضي الله عنه .
ويتابع المؤلف الحديث عن فرقة الشيعة الرافضة ، فبيّن سبب تسميتهم بالرافضة ، ونشأتهم ودور اليهود في ذلك ، والمراحل التي مر بها الشيعة ، وأهم عقائد الشيعة الرافضة ، وموقف علماء أهل البيت من تلك العقائد المنسوبة إليهم ، كعقيدة الإمامة وحكم من جحدها ، والعصمة ومناقشة أدلتها وبيان بطلانها ، وكذلك الإشارة إلى أدلتهم في القرآن الكريم ، كآية التطهير ، والمباهلة ، والولاية ، وخطبة غديرهم ، ثم بيان الأحاديث الضعيفة والموضوعة التي استدلوا بها على الإمامة ، كحديث الطائر ، وحديث النار ... وغيرها . ويبرهن المؤلف على ما أورده بحديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : " فعليكم بسنتي وسُنّة الخلفاء الراشدين من بعدي ، تمسكوا بها وعضوا عليها بالنواجذ " وحذر من مخالفتها بقوله : " وإياكم ومحدثات الأمور ، فإن كل محدثة بدعة وكل بدعة ضلالة " .
