يحاول المؤلف من خلال كتابه "المتطرفون خوارج العصر" معالجة ظاهرة متفشية في بعض بلاد المسلمين وهي ظاهرة التطرف والغلو الديني الذي نشأ عنها مسألة التكفير. فالتكفير حكم شرعي تترتب عليه أمور خطيرة، ولذلك حذر جميع العلماء منه، ووضعوا الضوابط الدقيقة المانعة من تكفير المسلمين، هذا وإن بعض الشباب المتحمس يقرأ بعض الكتب أو يسمع بعض الدروس التي فيها وصم كثير من المسلمين بالكفر أو الشرك، فينطلق هؤلاء الشباب الذين أشربوا هذه المعاني، وحقنوا بهذه الأفكار فتمتد أيديهم إلى الفتك والقتل. من هذا المنطلق رأى المؤلف أن من واجبه مناقشة هذه الظاهرة وبيان أبعادها وآثارها وإبراز ما أصاب المسلمين من داخل صفهم من بلايا ومحن من جرائها.
وقد جعل الكتاب في مقدمة وخمسة أبواب. الباب الأول عن الخوارج، وفي الباب الثاني تكلم المؤلف فيه عن مظاهر التطرف وآفاته، وأما الباب الثالث فقد دار حول أسباب التطرف الديني. وتم في الباب الرابع التحدث عن مخاطر التكفير وضوابط، وخصص الباب الخامس والأخير عن طرق وسبيل العلاج.
