الليبراليون كما ننوه في الكتاب، وكما يرى من كتب عنهم، حتى لو انضووا في أحزاب أو حركات، يبقى ما يميزهم التفرد والحرية، ومتى غاب هذان الشرطان غابت صفة الليبرالية عنهم، يضاف الى شرط الحرية والفردية المميزين لهم، بعض الشروط الأخرى الداعمة لمفهوم الليبرالية. وهذا يجعلنا نحذر من فهم العنوان "الليبراليون العرب" على أنه يشتمل على جميع من يتصفون بهذه الصفة، كمنخرطين في المشروع الذي يدور الكتاب حول الحديث عنه.
استحقاق الحرية اقتضى ويقتضي تنوع المواقف منه، دون أن، يعني التفكير له أو استبعاده من المشروع الليبرالي، إذ عندها تنتفي الليبرالية. والتنوع قد يكون في النظر الى سبل تحقيق أعلى قدر من الحرية، ليس للفرد فقط، بل للأوطان، لما بين حرية الفرد وحرية الوطن من جدلية، من هنا جاء تنوع نظر هؤلاء الى سبل تحقيق هذا الهدف، ومن هنا جاء السقوط في فخ استدعاء أو تشجيع الأجنبي على وضع جيوشه في خدمة تحقيق هذا الشعار الذي ينقلب الى ضده، والذي يجعل الحرية منتفية لا محالة، عن الأوطان وعن الأفراد.
ولا شك أن هذا ليس مقصد الليبراليين إلا أن يكون بعضهم قد وصل به التماهي مع المشروع الأجنبي ما يسوغ له أن يكون جزءاً منه. بالتالي لا يصح أن يكون هذا الموقف ليبرالياً بجدارة، فالموقف الليبرالي بجدارة هو الذي لا يتنازل عن أية جزئية تدعم حريته وحرية وطنه.
