انطلق سؤال الحرية في البلدان العربية من عملية الحداثة وأفكار التنوير والنهضة العربية في مرحلة التنظيمات العثمانية، قبل أن يمتزج بمفهوم الحرية الوطنية والقومية في الإستعمار، وبقيت الأفكار العربية بشأن الحرية مظللّة برؤية ضبابية إلى المسألة الديمقراطية بعد مرحلة الإستقلال السياسي للدول العربية، وتحدّي مفهوم الديمقراطية.
يضمّ هذا الكتاب بحوثاً منتقاة من أعمال المؤتمر السنوي الخامس للعلوم الإجتماعية والإنسانية، الذي عقده المركز العربي للأبحاث ودراسة السياسات بين 12 و 14 آذار / مارس 2015 في الدوحة، وتمحورت حول موضوع "الحرية في الفكر العربي المعاصر" الذي يعدّ مفهوماً مركباً متعدد الأبعاد، تلتقي فيه إشكاليات متعددة يحيل بعضها إلى بعض بطريقة تفاعلية، وتمثّل مقاربته وإعادة إنتاجه أساس طرح أسئلة التقدّم والتنمية والحداثة في المجتمعات العربية المعاصرة، إنطلاقاً من حرية الفرد وسياسات الإعتراف في الفكر العربي المعاصر، ومن الليبرالية في المقاربات العربية للحرية، خصوصاً الحرية الدينية، ومن أزمة فكر الحرية في البلدان العربية، وفضاءات الإنتاج الفكري والإبداعي، والمشروعية السياسية والدستورية والتحرّر الوطني وحرية المرأة.
