تعد قضية أفعال العباد من القضايا الشائكة التي تتطلب الخوض فيها برفق، والإلمام التام بكل أركانها، ومراعاة الحذر في مناقشة جميع جوانبها، لأنها تتعلق بالقضاء والقدر ولعل القضايا المتعلقة بالقضاء والقدر تقتضي صحة في العقيدة، وقوة في الإيمان، حتى لا يؤثر الجدل العقلي على طمأنينة القلب العامر بالإيمان، أو تحاول البراهين النظرية، زعزعة اليقين في القلب المستضيء بنور الهداية الإلهية، خاصة بعد أن أخذت هذه القضية – أفعال العباد – حظها في المناقشة عند معظم علماء الفرق الكلامية، كما تداولتها كتبهم، وكان موقفهم واضحاً فيها.
أما الصوفية فقد غابت آراؤهم حولها عند كتاب الفرق كما غاب موقفهم فيها عند معظم كتب التراجم والسير، ولذا التمسنا وسيلة تكشف هذا الغموض وترفع هذا التناقض. فكان التعرف على طبيعة منهجهم هو الوسيلة التي ساعدت في التعرف على موقفهم منها.
ويشتمل الكتاب على خمسة فصول وخاتمة – فقد تناول الفصل الأول طبيعة المنهج عند الصوفية وأهم سماته وثمراته أما الفصل الثاني فقد اشتمل على عقائد الصوفية ذات الصلة بقضية أفعال العباد، ثم يأتي الفصل الثالث لكي يعرض لموقف الصوفية من قضية أفعال العباد ويناقش أبعاد هذا الموقف، أما الفصل الرابع، فإنه يعرض لصور الإرادة الإنسانية في المقامات عند الصوفية وهل جاءت على صورة إيجابية تؤكد دور الإرادة الإنسانية في التحقق بالمقامات أم أنها جاءت على صورة سلبية تنفي دور العبد في نزول المقامات أو الترقي فيها، ثم يأتي الفصل الخامس والأخير، فيعرض صور الفعل الإنساني في الأحوال عند القوم وتعد الأحوال مجالاً خصباً لصور الفعل الإنساني.
