قال بزل فاليري الناقد الفرنسي الشهير "كل ما يقال قد قيل من قبل" بمعني أن كل جديد هو قديم؛ واتضح لمؤرخي الفكر في ضوء القراءات المعاصرة أن كل قديم هو جديد أيضاً. ويعتبر البعض أن البحث ما هو إلا مغامرة. كذلك قد أثبت د. عصمت نصّار صحته بكتابه هذا الذين بين أيدينا.

وبداية ألفت النظر إلي أن عنوان الكتاب الذي أختير بذكاء هو عنوان مراوغ وإن لم يكن مغالطاً. فالكتاب ليس عن موقف ثقافتنا العربية علي الإطلاق من الأديان، إنما هو عن موقف تلك الثقافة في حقبة بعينها هي حقبة ما بين الحربين، من الدين الإسلامي علي وجه التحديد بإعتباره هو الذي أنتج كل هذه الثقافة.
إطلق د. عصمت نصّار في مغامرته الجريئة في طريق لم يعبد من قبل وعاد منها غانماً بقدر كبير من "الحقائق" عن كثير من الخبايا والخفايا والغوامض. واختار نهجاً جريئاً ألا وهو قلب المراكز رأساً علي عقب بمعني أنه جعل إسماعيل أدهم وفيلكس فارس هما القلب أو المركز وجعل "الكبار" في الأطراف.
