حين يطفح الخطاب الشعري من أعماق البنية العميقة متمثلاً بالبنية السطحية الملفوظة أو المكتوبة يدخل المتلقي عندها طرفاً في عملية الإبداع، وينتقل تأثير الخطاب إليه سلباً أو إيجاباً، جودة وقوة أو ضعفاً، وفقاً لملكات الخلق الشعرية التي يمتلكها الشاعر، في أثناء الخلق الشعري والتي تحكمها ظروف عدة وأهم تلك القضايا الجوهرية التي تنتقل من خطاب المبدع إلى المتلقي، هي طبيعة تشكيل الخطاب، أو التركيب الصوتي وعلاقته بالدلالات التي يسعى إلى تكريسها الخطاب. وهذا هو الحقل الجديد الذي ينهض به النقد الصوتي في تحليل الخطاب، وكشف جمالياته، بعد أن ولد في أحضان علم الصوت الحديث.
وفي هذا الكتاب حاول المؤلف استثمار آليات النقد الصوتي، وأساليبه في تحليل الخطاب الأدبي، ونتائج الدراسات المختبرية في علم أصوات اللغة العربية، بعد أن توفرت لديه فرصة دراسة علم أصوات اللغة العربية، بعد أن توفرت لديه فرصة دراسة علم الصوت في بريطانيا، والاطلاع على تجارب البريطانيين في هذا المجال. وقد حاول أن يكون التطبيق النقدي، منصباً في هذا الكتاب على الشعر، والشعر المسرحي، وأن يكون متنوعاً بين العمودي والشعر الحرّ.
