سبق للمؤلّف أن درّس تاريخ النقد السينمائي في جامعة لاسابيينسا بروما، وهو مؤسس مجلة "السينما الجديدة" المشهورة، وله العديد من الأعمال المنشورة منها: "العالم الجديد للصورة الإلكترونية" 1985 و"السينما الفاشية" 1996. يعالج الكتاب ظاهرة سينمائية لطالما لفتت انتباه النقّاد والسينمائيين ألا وهي موجة الواقعية الجديدة في السينما الإيطالية، إذ تشير عبارة الواقعية إلى أعمال ذات إيديولوجيات متنوعة بنتائج فنية متفرقة، تم ربطها بخلفية مشتركة، لتسهل العودة إليها عند البحث في الانقطاع الذي يفصل بين الحاضر والماضي. على ذلك الأساس، نشأت الحركة التي ساهمت فيها دوافع مختلفة؛ فأفلام الواقعية الجديدة ذات طابع شعبوي لعرض المشاكل الحياتية؛ وهي رغبة صادقة في التحديث تدل على وعي باستعادة الحرية. وفي أماكن عديدة أخرى، كانت تلك الحركة السينمائية تبحث تارة في الثقافة عن خميرة تعجن بها أعمالها، وطوراً في إعادة اكتشاف القيم الحية والعملية. قضى غوِيدو أريستاركو أعواماً في المراجعات النقدية للأفلام، جعلت اسمه يقترن بأسماء أشهر المخرجين الإيطاليين وأفلامهم. وبرغم ما حظيت به من شهرة أفلام مثل "سارق الدراجة"، "روما مدينة مفتوحة"، "الحسّ"، "الوسواس"، "الأرض تهتزّ"، فإنه يعود الفضل إلى غوِيدو أريستاركو في معالجتها من زاوية نقدية منذ ظهورها الأول. يمثل كتاب أريستاركو خلاصة نقدية لتلك الموجة السينمائية التي شهدتها إيطاليا والتي لا تزال تشكل مصدر إلهام لدى الكثير من السينمائيين والمخرجين.
