إصدار مثل هذا الكتاب من مخطوطة وحيدة لاحقة هو مسألة ثقة . ذلك أن كتاباً من الأدب الجميل في القرن الخامس يجب أن يعامل بصورة مختلفة عن كتاب من القرن الثالث أو عن كتاب لغوي .
خلال المئة وخمسين سنة الأولى من الإسلام كان النمط الأدبي السائد نمط ثقافة الحرب الذي لم يكن مثمراً إلا من جانب واحد فقط ، كما أن عهد الرشيد والمأمون لم يجلب أسلوباً موحداً للحياة . كان الناس منشغلين كفاية في ترتيب أمورهم الاجتماعية والفكرية في البيت الجديد . وهكذا كان الأدب الجميل متقيداً جوهرياً بالأشكال القديمة . كان اسحاق الموصلي يجد قوته في المعرفة التاريخية العميقة للنشيد الحضري ، وفي نقد كتب الأغاني والشعراء ، والذي شمل ، مما أثار استغراب الآخرين ، حتى أباه المشهور ولم يسلم منه أبو نؤاس أيضاً .
بغداد ، المدينة الإسلامية الأولى التي لم تتطور عن معسكر الجيش ، ولذلك هي بدون سياسة عربية داخلية وبدون مصالح للعائلات ومن دون تقاليد . هنا نمت طبقة وسطى جديدة كلّياً رسّخت ، نتيجة القوة المركزية التي كانت تشعها المدينة على " دار الإسلام " بكاملها ، مُثُل الحياة العربية الدنيوية وجعلت القرون المتعاقبة حتى الحروب الصليبية زمن سيادة ثقافة التجار .
أدى ازدهار الطبقة التجارية المتمتعة بامتيازات كثيرة ، والطلب الواسع على الفن ، إلى ازدهار الشعر أيضاً . كان لدى إبراهيم الموصلي في بعض الأحيان ، ثمانون مغنية في البيت كان يعطيهن الدروس ، وبدأ الآن يعلّم الفتيات الجميلات العاليات التكلفة فنّه الذي كان في السابق مقتصراً على السود والصفر . كان التمتع بالفن قد أصبح أكثر قدرة على الدفع وأرقى ذوقاً العلامة المميّزة لكل ثقافة مدنية ومجتمعية ، التي لا تُسمع لا في الحرب ولا في الزراعة الإيقاع الطويل للطبيعة ، هي عدم الصبر ، الآذان المتعبة . فكلمة " ملّ " تحتل المكان الأول في نقد ذلك الزمان .
