كان من المفترض أن تجلب الإنتخابات الرئاسية لعام 2017م إحتضاناً كاملاً للبديل، ورفضاً لفترة رئاسة فرانسوا هولاند الإشتراكية التي امتدت خمس سنوات.
ولقد حقق الحزب المعارض الأهم (الجمهوريون) نجاحاً ساحقاً في الإنتخابات التمهيدية التي أجراها اليمين؛ إذ اختار ما يزيد على أربعة ملايين من الناخبين اليمينين فرانسوا فيون رئيس الوزراء الأسبق في حكومة نيكولا ساركوزي (رئيس الجمهورية خلال الفترة ما بين عامي 2007م و2012م)، واعتبرت كل وسائل الإعلام المعروفة وغالبية المعلقين إنتخابات اليمين التمهيدية بمنزلة جولة فعلية ضمن الإنتخابات الرئاسية؛ إذ كان من المتوقع ان يكون فيون المرشح المفضل؛ نظراً إلى عدم شعبية هولاند.
وبدا هذا التوقع معقولاً أيضاً؛ نظراً إلى صعود شعبية الجبهة الوطنية اليمينية المتطرفة بقيادة مارين لوبان؛ فلقد كان الجميع على يقين بأن لوبان ستفوز بالجولة الأولى، وسترفع من شأن حزبها بشكل لم يُعهد من قبل.
وكان من المفترض أن يعطي الناخبون أصواتهم للمرشح المحافظ فرانسوا فيون، وعلى عكس ما جرى في الإنتخابات الرئاسية عام 2002م - عندما أحدث والد لوبان (قائد الجبهة الوطنية آنذاك) صدمةً للفرنسيين؛ حينما شهدت أسهم اليمين المتطرف هبوطاً حاداً في الجولة الأولى من الإنتخابات؛ الأمر الذي أدى إلى تحول جذري لصالح جاك شيراك (المرشح المحافظ آنذاك)؛ نظراً إلى رفض الناس، وخوفهم من فكرة حكم اليمين المتطرف المحظورة آنذاك - فلقد رأى الإعلام والمعلقون أن ماين لوبان ستتمكن من خوض جولة الإعادة.
